Celebrate the 70th birthday of great American composer John Adams with a special performance of his most beloved opera choruses and one of his all-time favorite works that influenced him as a composer. Publisher Boosey & Hawkes approached Artistic Director Grant Gershon to curate a collection of soon-to-be-released piano transcriptions of his popular opera choruses that have been transcribed by pianist Chitose Okashiro. Each will be featured with a different, virtuosic pianist to accompany the full chorus.
After the homage, we roll out three additional pianos to the stage for one of Adams’ all-time favorite works: Stravinsky’s Les Noces (The Wedding). Four virtuosic pianists join guest soloists and the LA Master Chorale for Stravinsky’s raucous Russian peasant wedding, where young lovers are put through a series of unusual folk rituals before they finally say their “I do’s” amidst the drunken revelry.
This production is made possible with generous underwriting from the Colburn Foundation.
