ABOUT THIS CONCERT

There is no better way for you to kick off your season with the Master Chorale than the All-Night Vigil, a stellar demonstration of the full power, complexity, and majesty of the human voice. Ten of the 15 sections are based on chants of the Russian Orthodox Church; the other five are tributes by Rachmaninoff to his Russian Homeland. All of them were written in 1915, as World War I raged, and the Russian Revolution was just around the corner. Today, the All-Night Vigil stands as the high point of the Russian Orthodox choral tradition, virtuosic in its writing and symphonic in its tone, color, and scope.
