Bio:
“Malaki and his golden tenor anchored the opera and his expressive singing sent it soaring!” a Washington Post Review of the debut of a Filipino opera, Noli Me Tangere, at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington, DC. The opera was also presented in Manhattan, NY and in Manila at the Newport Performing Arts Theater (World Resorts Manila) with him essaying the main role of Crisostomo Ibarra. Acclaimed Filipino tenor Sal Malaki beams with pride and joy being a Hinunangnon and an outstanding son of Southern Leyte. He is one of the most seasoned artists of the Los Angeles Opera and the Los Angeles Master Chorale. He is an esteemed member of both the LAO and the LAMC in more than 25 seasons where he has performed in more than 140 opera productions since joining the LA Opera in over 75 different operas presented in its original language. Sal started singing as a boy soprano in a local church choir. He became the choir’s soloist until his voice changed. He further discovered more of his talents in his high school years – playing the ukulele, guitar and the bamboo flute with which he played as a soloist in Dr. Beaunoni Espina’s opera, The Legend of the Bakunawa. He joined the Hilltop Concert Chorale where he experienced deeper understanding and discipline in chorale singing. He graduated as the class valedictorian despite his busy schedule in the academics, extra-curricular and a part time janitor for the church and its day care center. In 2012, he collaborated with Dr. Charito Pizarro, a scholar, educator and professor at the University of Heidelberg. Together they presented concerts in Heidelberg, Germany; Berne and Aarburg, Switzerland on the works of Dr. Jose Rizal, the Philippine National Hero. Then in 2013, the Philippine Embassy in Switzerland invited him as a special guest artist to commemorate the Philippine Independence Day (6/ 12) in Zurich. He then proceeded to Schaffhausen, where he was presented in a concert by the city on Rizal’s birthday (6/19) as the city’s acknowledgment of Rizal’s martyrdom, who visited the city of Schaffhausen in June 2-3, 1887 together with Dr. Maximo Viola. He was one of the 48 selected singers to tour with the LA Philharmonic Orchestra in London, Lucerne, Paris and New York performing the work of American composer John Adams’ “The Gospel According to the Other Mary”, conducted by Maestro Gustavo Dudamel, with stage direction by Peter Sellars. Sal graduated with two degrees from the University of the Philippines College of Music (BM - Voice Major; TD - Flute Major). He was a faculty at the UP College of Music and was a Voice Department chairman at St. Scholastica’s College, Manila. During his UP days, he became a member and soloist of the UP Madrigal Singers. He is the only Filipino (or Asian for that matter) who sings regularly in both the LA Opera Company and the LA Master Chorale for 27 seasons and counting… “Musica, Grata Deo!”
