Julia Metzler

Los Angeles-based soprano Julia Metzler is an active up-and-coming opera singer and concert soloist. Her recent and upcoming roles include Vitellia in La Clemenza di Tito, Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte, Mrs. P in The Man who Mistook his Wife for a Hat, Micaëla in Bizet's The Tragedy of Carmen, and the title role in Gustav Holst's Savitri.

As a roster member of the Los Angeles Master Chorale, Ms. Metzler can frequently be heard performing at the Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl. She has performed as a soloist with both the Los Angeles Philharmonic and with the Chorale, most recently in Bach’s Magnificat and Handel’s Messiah. Other solo credits include Verdi’s Requiem (UCLA Philharmonia), Bach’s B minor Mass (Pasadena Pro Musica), Haydn’s Stabat Mater (Pasadena Pro Musica), and Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy (San Francisco Choral Union).

A frequent opera competitor, Ms. Metzler was a 2018 Metropolitan Opera National Council Awards National Semi-Finalist. She has also won awards from the Pasadena Opera Guild Competition (Second Place), the Pacific Musical Society Competition (First Place), the Mondavi Center Young Artists’ Competition (Grand Prize), and the Los Angeles Spotlight Awards (Grand Prize).

In 2011, Ms. Metzler participated in the I Sing International Festival, a summer program designed to introduce western singers to Mandarin as a lyric language. While in Beijing, she studied Mandarin and coached intensively with Metropolitan Opera bass, Hao Jiang Tian. That summer, she made her debut at the National Center for Performing Arts with the China National Symphony Orchestra.

She returned again in Summer of 2014, when she made her debuts at the Hangzhou Grand Theater, the Suzhou Culture and Arts Centre, and the Great Hall of the People in Tian'anmen Square in Beijing. She has also performed in concerts of Chinese music at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall with the New York City Opera Orchestra, and in Paris at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. In 2017, she was invited to sing on CCTV for China's Lunar New Year Gala - the most widely watched television broadcast in the world.

Ms. Metzler has appeared on the NPR radio show 'From the Top,' and was featured in the HBO Miniseries 'Masterclass,' coaching with Plácido Domingo. 

Ms. Metzler holds degrees in vocal performance from San Francisco Conservatory of Music and from UCLA. She hails from a family of classical musicians, and together the Metzler family runs the Metzler Violin Shop in Glendale.
