About Big Sing California

This project is the realization of the Master Chorale’s commitment to a multi-year initiative to get more people singing together, regardless of one’s musical background or skill level as a means of artistic expression and community engagement. Building off the launch and success of our Big Sing L.A., the Big Sing California event will be free for all participants (whether singing in Walt Disney Concert Hall, at one of the Hub venues, or for anyone wanting to watch and sing along online). This project is generously supported through a significant grant from the Irvine Foundation, with additional support from the California Arts Council and several generous individual donors.

Frequently asked questions

What is this event all about?
Composer and Artist-in-Residence Eric Whitacre hosts this live choral concert with the Los Angeles Master Chorale and 2,000 audience singers at Walt Disney Concert Hall, which will simultaneously be broadcasted to five California satellite venues where choirs will be assembled and singing with each other in real-time.  In addition, the concert will be live-streamed online (right here) for anyone in the world to watch – and sing along.
Do I need to audition?
Definitely not! All singers are welcome regardless of ability. This is a fun event open to anyone and everyone.
Are children allowed to attend?
Because of the nature of the repertoire we will singing, Big Sing California is highly recommended for teenagers and adults. Children under 6 will not be admitted.
Do I have to read music to participate?
No, you do not have to read music to participate. Many of the songs we will be singing are familiar pop songs, others can be learned by listening to the tutorial videos on our “Practice” web page.
Will I be able to get a ticket if I’m on the waitlist?
Although we can’t guarantee that you’ll get a ticket if you’re on the waitlist, we CAN guarantee that a considerable number of singers won’t confirm/use their tickets when we get to July. Free tickets always have a high turnover and you likely have a very good chance of getting into your selected venue if you join the waitlist. Everyone will know whether they will be confirmed a seat by July 18.
Will we be seated in the theaters by voice part?
We will NOT be seated by voice part (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass). In order for friends and family to sit together, we will be singing as mixed voices in all venues.
Can I sit next to my friends and family?
Yes! All venues will be seated as general admission by seating section. Just make sure you arrive with your friends and family when you bring your vouchers so you can all sit together.
How can I be a part of Big Sing California if I’m not in one of the cities?
You can live-stream the event on this website on Saturday, July 21, beginning at 2 pm PDT. And if you’re ambitious, you can organize your own hub city event and apply to host your own Big Sing California group sing. Visit the “Locations” page for more details.
How much does it cost?
This event is completely FREE in all venues and online streaming, thanks in large part to a generous grant from The James Irvine Foundation.
Can I just come and watch?
You could, but why? You can watch from home when the concert is live-streamed! This is a fun singing event, and we hope everyone who participates will sing at some point during the concert.
